Antur Fort, also known as Anturgad, is a historical fort located near Nagapur village in the Kannad taluka of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district (formerly Aurangabad district) of Maharashtra, India. Situated on a spur of the Ajantha-Satmala mountain range, the fort stands at an elevation of approximately 2,651 feet, offering commanding views of the surrounding landscape.
History
Antur Fort was likely constructed around the middle of the 15th century by a Maratha chieftain, after whom it was named.
Over the centuries, the fort's control shifted hands.
Structure
The fort's layout takes advantage of the natural terrain. The hill on which it stands is almost square in shape, with steep natural scarps on three sides, providing a formidable natural defense.
Key features of Antur Fort include:
- Multiple Entrances: The fort has a unique defense system with three main gates built at right angles to each other, forcing any attackers to navigate a narrow, winding path, making them vulnerable. The main gate on the east is particularly grand, and the second gate features interesting sculptures, including cannonballs used for decoration.
- Fortifications: Two lines of walls with bastions at intervals encircle the brow of the hill.
The ramparts are well-preserved in many sections, offering excellent views. - Water Management: A large lake on the south side of the hill and carved water tanks within the fort ensured a water supply for the inhabitants. Underground stone drains were also constructed to channel rainwater into the lake.
- Ruined Structures: Within the fort, remnants of various buildings can be seen, including what might have been a commander's residence (now a tomb of a Sufi saint), a mosque with inscriptions, and storage areas like a granary and arsenal.
- Watch Towers: Towers along the ramparts provided strategic vantage points for surveillance. A notable square-shaped bastion on the highest point offers panoramic views of the fort and the surrounding Ajanta-Satmala range.
- Inscriptions: Persian inscriptions on the gates and a square pillar near the fort indicate the periods of construction and rule.
Getting There
Antur Fort is located near Nagapur village in the Kannad Taluka of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.
- From Kannad: A road from Kannad towards Nagad passes through the Gautala Sanctuary. A side road from this leads to Sillod, and further on, a dirt road goes to Nagapur. From Nagapur, a path leads to Antur Fort, passing through a small settlement called Kholapur.
- From Chalisgaon (Jalgaon district): One can reach Nagod village and then travel via Mhaisghat to Dastapur, the base of Antur. A trek up the hill leads to the fort.
Both routes converge near the main entrance of the fort.
Significance
Antur Fort stands as a testament to the strategic importance of the region and the architectural skills of the Maratha and subsequent rulers. Its well-preserved fortifications, unique gate system, and historical inscriptions make it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts, trekkers, and those interested in exploring the heritage of Maharashtra. The fort also offers stunning natural beauty and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
