• Maratha Conquest: In 1737, the Marathas, under the leadership of Chimaji Appa, successfully wrested control of the fort from the Portuguese. Legend has it that Chimaji Appa vowed to offer a garland of beli leaves at a nearby Amruthaishwar temple if victorious, leading to the fort being renamed Belapur Fort after their triumph.  
• British Era: The Maratha reign continued until 1817 when Captain Charles Gray of the British East India Company captured the fort. As part of their policy to diminish Maratha strongholds, the British partially destroyed the fort, reducing its strategic importance.

Though largely in ruins today, Belapur Fort's remnants hint at its historical and military significance. Unfortunately, the fort is in a dilapidated state, with vegetation overgrowing its walls. Concerns about encroachment and dumping of debris have led to the use of the Right to Information Act to advocate for its protection. While restoration plans have been discussed, significant work is yet to be undertaken.
